Zen Bound 2 coming in time for the iPad launch?
News By Phil May at 08:41 on 08/03/2010 - 0 comments

Tags: Zen Bound 2, Secret Exit Studios, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch

Many of you seemed to miss out on Zen Bound, a game that showed off the 3D capabilities of the iPhone / iPod Touch to good effect. Basically a game that centred around wrapping solid objects in string to re-paint them, it's easy to see why Zen Bound picked up a cult following but didn't win many fans amongst the boob-jiggling-app brigade.

Now Zen Bound 2 is imminent, and it looks like the game's being touted as a launch title for Apple's new iPad. The bigger screen and faster processor should mean that string-wrappers get something of a treat.

Raging Thunder 2 hits the iTunes store
News By Phil May at 11:12 on 05/03/2010 - 0 comments

Tags: Raging Thunder 2, Polarbit, iPhone, iPod Touch, 3D Racing Game

We've already reported on Polarbit's sublime top-down racer Deliverace so we might as well let you know that Raging Thunder 2, the team's other racing game, has hit the iTunes store.

Looking very much like an iPhone version of classic Burnout, Raging Thunder 2 looks blisteringly fast and smooth.

Polarbit certainly look like a team to keep a close eye on. In the meantime, here's some footage of the game in action:

Deliverace kicks the top-down racer genre up a notch on iPhone and iPod Touch
News By Phil May at 10:50 on 05/03/2010 - 3 comments

New iPhone / iPod Touch racer Deliverace looks very like an old PC top-down racer, Ignition. And that's no bad thing.

Developers Pixelbite are rabid fans of games like Micro Machines and Mashed, so expect similar shenanigans in Deliverace (ace name!) The dirtiest tricks will win the day, as you and your opponents vie for top honours in deliciously designed mini racing tracks.

As ever, my babble doesn't do the game justice but perhaps this video will:

Awesome litte Advance Wars-esque strategy game, UniWar, on the iPhone and iPod Touch is now free for 24 hours.

This deceptively deep, turn-based strategy title was one of the first iPhone games to feature asynchronous gameplay with push alerts used to indicate when it's your turn.

With three races to select from and tons of different modes and settings to choose from, it's a fantastic package and one I'd wholeheartedly encourage you to buy at full price, never mind for free.

Why are you even still reading? Go and download it already. UniWar

New gizmo turns iPhone/Touch into IR remote control
News By Richard Horne at 20:36 on 02/03/2010 - 1 comment

Tags: iPhone, Infra Red, Remote Control, RedEye Mini, Thinkflood

Hardware and software developer Thinkflood today took the wrapping off its cool new device, the RedEye mini, for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

This tiny IR 'dongle' plugs into your iPhone's 3.5mm earphone jack, leaving the docking port free, and when combined with the free RedEye app allows you to use your iPhone and iPod Touch as an all-on-one universal remote control. Using this combination of hardware and software it's possible to control your TV, AV Receiver, Blu-Ray player, DVD player etc etc.

And with plenty of customisation options it's possible to use whichever combination of multitouch/accelerometer gestures you'd like to control your home devices.

At $49 it also happens to be quite the bargain.

Canabalt developers are releasing Gravity Hook on iPhone / iPod Touch
News By Phil May at 12:42 on 02/03/2010 - 2 comments

Tags: Gravity Hook HD, iPhone, iPod Touch, Semi Secret Games, Canabalt

I didn't like Canabalt, but there's no denying that Semi Semi Secret games are a talented bunch.

Before they produced Canabalt, they wrote a superb little flash game called Gravity Hook. Now it looks like you'll be able to play this on iPhone and iPod Touch soon - but here's a free PC preview of the game to get you hooked (hah, see what I did there? I made a funny).

Here's the URL for Gravity Hook HD. You can play it in a "virtual" iPhone-shaped window, and I DEFY you to see if you can last an entire lunch break without playing it to bits.

Like a cross between Peggle and Bionic Commando, it's a damned neat twist on retro gravity-based gaming. Day one purchase for the iPhone version then!

Apple Contemplates Explicit Category for App Store
News By Richard Horne at 13:02 on 25/02/2010 - 3 comments

Tags: Apple, Censorship, Boobies, Playboy, Breasts

Apple has been in the headlines a lot this week for its recent purge on all things naughty and salacious on the iTunes App Store.

The main bone of contention seems to revolve around Apple's supposed 'selective' removal of certain apps created by lesser-known companies. Meanwhile, apps by such celebrated publications as Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Zoo and Nuts magazine remain unscathed.

This tale took another turn towards the unexpected yesterday when a mysterious new 'Explicit' option appeared and then later disappeared from the filter options on the App store. Apple later told Gizmodo when questioned directly about the possibility of it introducting a section on the App Store devoted specifically to explicit apps that "it's not going to happen anytime soon."

Which probably means it'll appear again next week.

Why do people insist on buying these things? Isn't that what google's image search with safeguards turned off is for?

No Nazi Zombies for Infinity Ward's side of the CoD franchise
News By Richard Horne at 20:00 on 24/02/2010 - 0 comments

Tags: Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2, World at War, Nazi Zombies, Robert Bowling

Robert Bowling, community manager for Infinity Ward, this week confirmed that the developer has absoultely no plans to follow in stable-mate Treyarch's foot-steps by releasing any Nazi Zombie addon packs for Modern Warfare 2.

In an emphatic statement released to IGN, Bowling said that:
"There will be no Nazis or zombies in any piece of Modern Warfare 2 downloadable content." which sounds fairly final to me.

Treyarch's Nazi Zombie addons have proved to be massively popular with the World at War community and have no doubt made a considerable sum for both the developer and Activision the publisher. They even spawned an iPhone game for which a free Lite version is available to download.
